Intake Process
Welcome!! We have some regulated steps to go by to determine who requires ENL services. When a new student enters the country, his/her parent completes a "home language survey" which tells us which language is spoken at home. We also look at your transcript to see if you have received English services in your prior school. If these two documents tell us that you need English services, I will give you the NYSITELL (New York State Identification Test for English Language Learners) to determine your level of English language skills. Once the state has given us your results, I will host a family meeting with you, your parent/guardian, your guidance counselor, and myself to share the results with you and give you more information on how we will proceed with your education as an English Language Learner! Once you test as an English Language Learner, you must test "commanding/proficient" on the NYSESLAT to exit the program. You will take the NYSESLAT exam every May to assess your language level. Here is a practice test!
